I have heard of it the other way around, however. The book For Matrimonial Purposes (Kavita Daswani) is basically a true story of an Indian woman's search for a husband. It was written as an autobiography, but the publisher (Harpercollins) decided to market it as a novel. I know that there was a disagreement between the editor and sales people; I;m not sure who was for which version; maybe someone wants to google it.
