I can understand not wanting rape, bestiality, pornography, and pedophilia, but why the aversion to same-sex romance? Usually only see that from publishers who are specifically labeled as Christian Inspirational. This publisher makes no such claim. So what's the reasoning?

As veinglory noted, listing those things together as if they are similar in nature is quite offensive.

Absolutely! I wouldn't even READ anything put out by this publisher, let alone submit to them.

Hi,

Today, another author was telling me about her great experience with J. Taylor Publishing. It made me curious about them.

Their website is classy, and their covers are quite nice. However, they don't have a lot of books yet, and they are too new to be mentioned on Preditors and Editors.

I'm wondering if anyone has info on this publisher.

Thanks,
Diana Green

There's a thread here: <snipped>

(I suspect the room mod will be along to merge this post to that).

There's still no info about the folks behind the publisher.

And still they won't accept some of what I write (books with same-sex romances/relationships) so they're off my list.

Yeah, I noticed they wouldn't take same sex romance relationships, which always bugs me in a publisher. Why the restriction?

Also, I noticed their submission guidelines specify, no illegal activities without negative consequences. That seems really broad and limiting. Obviously, I don't advocate for crime in my books, but sometimes "illegal activities" occur in the plot without clear negative consequences. Sometimes, I'm writing gritty real-world or dystopian future situations. There isn't always a handy negative consequence, and depending on the situation, sometimes the characters actions could be considered legitimate or, at least, understandable.

Amergina, I'll check out the other thread you shared.

Thanks,
Diana Green

Helpful thread

Not having been able to find this thread, previously, I started another one on the same topic. They'll probably get merged at some point.

This one is super helpful. A big thanks to everyone who offered information and opinions.

I agree that the whole homophobic thing puts me off, as does the "no illegal activity without negative consequences". That is too weird of a restriction to put on all books.

An earlier mention was made of their submission guideline requiring previous critiques for your manuscript. I went and looked...Sure enough, that is a required element of their submission form. You have to provide the URL of the site where your work was critiqued. I have never seen that from another publisher. Don't they have the skill to tell good writing from bad writing by themselves?

Anyway, I look forward to hearing more from authors who have had experience with this publisher. I know at least one who says they have been excellent to work with. For myself, I think I'll pass. There are too many issues.

Thanks for sharing,
Diana Green

From what I've gathered, they won't be taking anymore subs like ever. I believe the owner isn't letting anyone out of their contracts until they've run their course but, yeah, definitely not moving forward with publishing.
