Okay, so I'm trying to get some experience writing SEO and have the opportunity to do a sample for a part-time job. I've studied SEO, don't think I'll have a problem there. However, for the sample, they ask for 250 words using the keyword 'dentist New York'.

What am I supposed to do content-wise? Write about dentists in New York? An ad for a dentist in New York? So lost on this part. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Why don't you follow this website's example?

http://www.weightdietspills.com/how-to-discover-the-best-dentists-in-new-york-city/597.html

I have no idea what dentists in NY have to do with "weightdietspills". Seriously though, giving you a keyword like "dentist New York" isn't much help at all - I don't think there's any way you can spin that into a very exciting article. That's the thing with a lot of "SEO content" - they don't really care so much about the value of the content (as evidenced by that spectacular mess referenced above); they really just want their keywords prominently displayed in the article.

If I were you, though, I might go with some variation of "How to Discover the Best Dentists in New York" like the other website did. The topic itself wasn't so horrible - just the execution.

You really are best off asking the client what his/her rule on modifiers or punctuation is within a keyword. Some will allow you to add a modifier, so you get to use dentist "in" New York, others are very anti. Some will let you put in punctuation. so you could put visit a dentist. New York has a ...

Others do not allow any changes to the keyword. In a situation like that, you really have to be creative. I've been known to do things like "Visit a dentist New York. Your teeth and body will love you for it." It sounds silly, but making it location specific is the only way to get around it.

Thanks a ton, thought I was crazy there for a minute. Really appreciate the help. I think this is one of those situations where they just want to know that I know what SEO is, but still, being a writer, I get tripped up when someone asks me to write about 'dentist New York'. Have to get over that roadblock.

Thanks again!

You're welcome. It really is tough in that type of situation. I have one client who gives a keyword like that and then counts each word in the phrase as a separate keyword and doesn't want them used more than seven times in an article. So in this case, they'd count "New York Dentist" as three keywords, and they don't care if I break them up.

Another is a sticker for exact phrasing. They recently sent me a keyword along the lines of "coupon Bingo casino." And fitting that in so that it sounded logical was a pain.
