For me, it would depend on character pov. If it's in first or limited (especially deep) third, then it seems like he might think about his sexual preference/orientation at least in passing at times (even if he's focused on other things).

I'd guess the default assumption for many readers is that a character is straight unless told otherwise. It's rotten, but sadly, LGBT characters have been fairly rare, so even people who are not heteronormative in their own lives may fall into that assumption. I've personally read more novels with characters of different orientations lately, so I am less inclined to make assumptions than I once was.

My own inclinations is not to be any more upset about a character coming out as gay a bit later in the story--if it's handled realistically-- unless I felt like the author was deliberately trying to fool or mislead me.
