Just kidding--welcome aboard, Matt. An excellent book is "The Damned Engineers" which traces an American unit's actions at Normandy, Battle of the Bulge (in which it stopped an SS Panzer Group dead in its tracks) and the crossing at Remagen, all witnessed and written by the battalion's 29 year old commander.

What theater? What aspect of battle? Wehrmacht? Panzer corps? More details would help us recommend some books.

I'll toss out some in the meantime . . . The best book about the life of soldiers on the Eastern front is Omer Bartov's Hitler's Army. There is also a multi-volume official history of the German war effort, which is very good, especially on issues of planning and strategy (it's been translated into English).
