My review of The Innocent by David Baldacci

The Innocent opens with a bang. Will Robie, a hitman working for a secret U.S. agency, performs perfectly one hit after another in rough places all over the world. Then he’s hired for a hit close to home. A hit in Washington, D.C. A hit which does feel right and which Robie refused to carry out.

He’s now a man on the run.

Mr. Baldacci grabs the attention of the reader from page one and keeps him guessing until the last few pages. There are so many twists and turns in the storyline and the plot that one may find himself going back and reading again, to understand how all makes sense. The dialogue is sharp, the character development credible, and the descriptions succinct.

Robie crosses paths with Julie, a fourteen-year-old runaway from a foster home with her own secrets. They pair together and along with FBI special agent Nicole Vance they began investigating a double murder, a bus explosion and other seemingly unrelated episodes. The fact-paced story develops quite nicely into a something much bigger than Robie, Vance and Julie, an elaborate plot that if carried out would shock the entire country.

With echoes of the movie “Salt”—deep-cover agents—and the movie “Leon”—a hitman helping a teenager—The Innocent is a very entertaining novel. Cancel all your other activities for the weekend; you would want to read this book in one sitting.

Will Robie find out who is hunting him and why? How does the teenager fit into this picture? What is the ultimate goal of the plot and how can Robie stop it?
