I’m helping another writer with a novel set in Australia in the mid-1970s.

We need some information on wages and the cost of living - food, beer, cigarettes, petrol, etc, in this era, and our Google searches have been unproductive.

Can anyone provide any links to sites that may have this type of information, or offer any other suggestions that may help?

Thank you.

Home - but for how long?
What about...

all those govt statistics put together each year?

Back issues of newspapers from the'70s?

Back issues of mags?

Radio and Sound Archives?

Your Heritage Sound Archives with seniors recording their memories?

And your National Archives and National and State museums will have something too.

We tried the Aust. Bureau of Census and Statistics - no go.

I dunno about the papers in Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu,:poke: but we’re a bit more isolated, and hard copy papers are a fair way off.

We're still working on these.

For $25 AUD you can get a week's access to the entire Sydney Morning Herald Archive: http://archives.smh.com.au/ It should be all online (take the free tour to see if it's what you are after)

This will have probably everything you need - advertisements, etc (Although you might find a more plebby newspaper like the Telegraph is more useful)

Good luck !

Mac

Just to say...

most newspapers and magazine back issues are online somewhere.

Have you asked your state writers assoc for research assistance?

We've discovered that Queensland State Library may have what we need on their site.
