Having just reviewed some of the posts under "Oprah's been had...", and some of the comments regarding "fictionalized non-fiction", I am struck by a relatively simple question for which I do not perceive an immediate answer. Disregarding any question of ethics, what is the difference between a fictionalized memoir and first-person fiction? Or is it strictly a matter of ethics?

the author should be forthright with the publisher about the level of truth. it's then on the publisher to market it appropriately.

Being of the belief there is no absolute truth, I approach everything I read with two eyes. One is to take in what I am being told, the other is to seek the motivation and bias of the writer. Perhaps I am a cynic, but reality is not truth, and putting a reality into words is to present one view of that truth.

As Mark Twain once said: This is the story of my life as I choose to remember it.
