Since the novel I'm reprinting was once published by Houghton Mifflin, and that's a pretty good name to drop, what are the legalities of mentioning that on one of the title or copyright pages? I have the rights back, but I'd like it to be known that the book was once put out by a pretty decent publisher.

So long as you're sure you have the rights back (in writing) then it's good manners to mention HM in the acknowledgements; and I'd add a note to the copyright page that the book was first published by XXX in year XXX and so on.

If you think it will help, you can always mention it in the product description too, something along the lines of "First published by Houghton Mifflin in 1980, now released as an e-book for the very first time" - or whatever.

But only if you think it will help. The best product descriptions are short and snappy and have no extraneous information.
