I just joined, from Upstate, NY, and thought I'd introduce myself (after a week or so of lurking).
I've been thinking about writing a novel for a while. I read to my 8-year old nearly every night at bedtime. We're currently working our way through Harry Potter, and we've read a ton of Magic Treehouse, all of Encyclopedia Brown and the four Kingdom Keepers books. I'll be drawing from what she really likes about those, as well as the kinds of books I liked as a kid.
I'm working through the Snowflake Method, which fits very well with the way I organize my thoughts. I'm early in the process (working on expanding the single-paragraph synopsis to a one-page synopsis) but I've also got about 5,000 words of notes including scene ideas and some dialogue. I feel like I'm just a couple of weeks from actually getting the scene list down (step 8 if I'm not mistaken) pat.
I took a number of writing classes as a teen, including some with my mother, who now teaches creative writing herself. I consider this forum a writing group proxy.
I have a journalism degree and worked as a radio news reporter and anchor for a number of years, so I'm used to chugging out thousands of words a day. I'm hoping that those writing skills translate well to fiction - both require more showing than telling and the use of descriptive language to be effective.
I look forward to learning a lot more and contributing in any way I can.
