Sure, for a bit. It's almost bedtime. Going to play in the mud tomorrow.

Sorry, didn't mean to rub that in. ;)

Say Dan, what's the stocking rate for pairs out there where you're at?

Depends.

600 head at the most. The mountain pastures in a lot of places can only handle about a hundred or so.

One fool who bought a ranch not to long ago tried putting 900 out. They dang near starved.

Boston, you might say that. Sheesh, toys...

Dan, We live on the southern edge of the Flinthills. Our stocking rate is around 10 acres per pair per season.

My husband told me the story of one of the neighbors who moved here from back east and decided he wanted to raise cattle. Apparently, he thought he needed one bull for each cow. Thank God he asked before he went out and bought them.

I once worked for a place that was owned by a lawyer who thought he knew all.

Most of the cows had lost their teeth and where over ten years old. And he wanted the bulls run all year.

We bought this old cow from the auction, she had five different brands on her. And she'd always pin us up on the fence. Get her in a bunch though and she was a little easier to work with.

One year, about five years ago, we had to start feeding in early October, cause there was no more feed on the mountain.

You might have to start early this year if it's been dry.

Funny, it's a lawyer that thought he needed one cow for every bull. Five brands, it's a wonder anyone got close enough to brand her each time!

There'll be no shortage of hay this year. Most oftern the ranches around here sell hay to the ranches down south in the vallies. Not this year from what I'm hearing. Most of the outfits down there had to sell a lot of their stock, cause they can't afford to buy any more feed.

That's too bad. But, we've been in the same situation ourselves. More than once. You can't afford to feed them because the prices are so sorry or because you have to start so early. Sometimes it's a darned frustrating way to try to make a living.

I suppose that's why we both work. So we can afford to farm and raise cattle!

Sad the way its become. When you've got to have a town job to support the Farm/Ranch.

It was either that or go ridiculously huge. That's what's happening around here. Very few farmers, in debt up to their eyeballs for lots of big equipment that farm most of the land. I'm mostly worried about the young people who want to farm and won't ever be able to. No land to rent, no equity to buy equipment with. Just a desire and sweat don't work any more.

It's almost 11:30 and I have to get up by 6. Forget beauty sleep, it's too late for that. I need to get some sleep, period. Dan, I'll see you tomorrow. Have a good night.
