Trouble is a Friend of Mine's soundtrack is a work in progress. So far I am certain of a few songs and have possibilities for others. Part of my soundtracking problem is that I don't know what a lot of the rest of the novel will be. And I need at least one more song for what I've already written--for when Trouble's dad shows up or when they are on the run from him.

Likely songs:
Trouble is a Friend - Lenka
That Kind of Day - Sarah Buxton
Both Hands - Ani Difranco (or) Underwater - Delerium (or both, depending on how the novel goes)
Ordinary Day - Vanessa Carlton
Butterfly - Corinne Bailey Rae

Possible:
Push - Matchbox 20
The Shadow Proves the Sunshine - Switchfoot
I Got Trouble - Christina Aguilera
Trouble Sleeping - Corinne Bailey Rae
Think About Your Troubles - Harry Nilsson (pretty sure this song's not making the cut)
I Got Rhythm - Melinda Doolittle
Bring Me Down - Lenka
Hate That I Love You - Rihanna and... someone
If You Want It to be Good Girl (Get Yourself a Bad Boy) - Backstreet Boys (pretty sure this song is going to end up not working)

my soundtrack actually has like 31 songs on it, but the most applicable ones are as follows:

copeland - hold nothing back
crooked fingers - doctors of deliverance
grateful dead - althea
the hush sound - out through the curtain
imogen heap - the walk
jon foreman - the cure for pain
lovedrug - down towards the healing
sufjan stevens - redford (for yia yia & pappou)
trespassers william - lie in the sound
U2 - with or without you
world's end girlfriend - listening you
zee avi - let me in
pearl jam - release

also, pretty much anything by bark cat bark is totally in sync with my WIP. he's an amazingly talented musician, and nobody seems to know about him. you should all check him out. he's got some free downloads on his last.fm page. :)

Oddly, Capon Frank has a bit of ABBA and Debby Boone, although there is a particular scene that requires Robert Plant's Reckless Love. It also requires hip CSI music in another scene.

The rest is up to the director's tastes once the film options are sold.

Each of my character has their own playlist, but I'm not too psyched about the girl's list yet.
So far the male MC is listening to:
All Apologies-- Nirvana
Doin Time-- Sublime
State of Love and Trust-- Pearl Jam
Low-- Cracker
Color Me Once-- Violent Femmes
Soul One-- Blind Melon
Locked Out-- Crowded House
Seeing Things-- The Black Crowes
When You Come Back to Me-- World Party
Intergalactic-- Beastie Boys
Around the World-- RHCP
and some random Dr. Dre instrumental that I don't know the name of.

Yes I did come of age in the early 90s, I can't imagine how you'd guess.

lisalulu- I love your Spirit Heart playlist just for the simple fact that it has Aqualung, Coldplay, OneRepublic, and Paramore on it. Awesome ^_^

Thanks. I love those songs. :D Fix You always makes me want to cry , Strange and Beautiful (I'll Put A Spell On You) is just gorgeous, same with Say (All I Need), and Crushcrushcrush is just awesome. :D

Actually I think Spirit Heart has the best possible soundtrack. For some reason I find alternative music very inspiring, compared to pop (I'm a sucker for some of that stuff :D), so that's why I think the music for Spirit Heart is the best. :D I must go turn the list into a playlist on Itunes...

Oh, and you call me Lisa. :)

Fix You always makes me want to cry too! Coldplay is one of my favorite bands though, their songs are always so beautiful and soothing.

My favorite song by Aqualung Good Times Gonna Come. I have that on one of my novel playlist and it always gets me unstuck when I'm stuck on a scene.

Yeah, but I really can't listen to pop or anything fast-paced when writing because then I rather dance or something instead of writing and that doesn't work out, so alternative is really the best music to. :D

Sometimes I need fast-paced music to write, especially during action and fun scenes, and other times I like to listen to quiet piano-based or acoustic songs or classical (film scores) songs. It depends on my mood, generally. :) I can't listen to quiet music when I'm really happy/hyper! :tongue

Pop music just isn't inspiring to me much. Not unless the song fits the scene I'm writing. Some of it is good for motivation, though. :D

That is totally going to be Matt's, one of the characters from Spirit Heart, song. Just because the song makes me grin and it'd be fun to have a 'flirty, i-am-so-sexy' male character. Even if he is just a side character (ok, Alix's, the FMC, male best friend). :D

Great post idea!

I don't have a chapter by chapter list but the songs that inspire the first book are...

The theme to “Edward Scissorhands” by Danny Elfman (the main Annabelle theme for the book).

“The Kraken” from the “Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest” soundtrack by Hans Zimmer (the main Dominic theme. He's the big bad)

“Love Song For A Vampire” by Annie Lennox (The main Eliza theme. It plays when she bites the dying children, turning them into vampires to save them)

“Journey to Transylvania” from the Van Helsing soundtrack by Alan Silvestri (this plays when Annabelle, Thomas, Roland and Eliza are escapeing the vampire/ trapper Fenroth in the woods.)

All the other songs on my playlist are for scenes and characters in the sequils.

Trouble is a Friend of Mine has something resembling a soundtrack now. There are a couple of songs that are sorta floating around in there and could be replaced if I found something better, but this is it for now. I can't believe how many of my "maybe this song"s ended up fitting the novel in the end.

Trouble is a Friend - Lenka
That Kind of Day - Sarah Buxton
Tied Down - Colbie Caillat
The Shadow Proves the Sunshine - Switchfoot
Both Hands - Ani DiFranco
Disarray - Lifehouse
You Get Me - Michelle Branch
Trouble Sleeping - Corinne Bailey Rae
I Got Trouble - Christina Aguilera
Push - Matchbox 20
Breathless - Corinne Bailey Rae
If You Want it to be Good, Girl (Get Yourself a Bad Boy) - Backstreet Boys
Hate That I Love You - Rihanna (and Ne-Yo?)
Bring Me Down - Lenka
Think About Your Troubles - Harry Nilsson
How Do You Do? - Shakira
Trouble - Coldplay
Ordinary Day - Vanessa Carlton
Butterfly - Corinne Bailey Rae

The soundtrack for Bones (I have taken to calling it A Casket Build For Two after the line in one of the songs) is mostly complete. A few songs are needed but it can stand on its own as an EP or something.

  1. We Are Born When We Die – Apollo Sunshine
  2. Higher Than Hope - Nightwish
  3. I'm Still Here - Johnny Reznik
  4. Dead Is The New Alive - Emilie Autumn
  5. 42 - Coldplay
  6. Gravity of Love - Enigma
  7. While Your Lips Are Still Red - Nightwish
  8. Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
  9. Happy Phantom - Tori Amos

It's absolutely beautiful, isn't it?

I am proud that I managed to step away from re-using Iris by Goo Goo Dolls, as I tend to use that every single time. I'm Still Here fits Gregory far more to a T though.

And I want a moment to be real,
Wanna touch things I don't feel,
Wanna hold on and feel I belong.
And how can the world want me to change,
They’re the ones that stay the same.
They can’t see me,
But I’m still here.

I re-heard it after a long time of not hearing it, and went, "Now that's something a ghost might feel".

Wow, nice.

I love randomly hearing songs and realizing they're perfect for a soundtrack.

  • “Everything is Alright” by Motion City Soundtrack
This.

I've been listening exclusively to MPLS music since my book is set here, and my WIP's playlist consists of nothing but Motion City Soundtrack, Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Cloud Cult, Bob Dylan, Doomtree/Dessa Darling/POS/Building Better Bombs (and all associated acts), Babes in Toyland, Semisonic, Owl City, Marcy's Playground, etc.

Hey! I'm from Minnesota too! And moving back to MPLS in four days. It's also where my book is set. You've got a good list of Cities bands. Owl City, Atmosphere, and Motion City are my favorites.

Hey! Yeah, MPLS is great. I feel like I'm not doing it justice, aesthetically in my WIP. But I'm trying.

I'm looking at your blog right now and we have a lot of things in common (*cough* Say Anything *cough* depression).

Nice to meet you.
