Hi there :)

My boyfriend seems to think that Ignorance means...something else.

Example:
The Boy- *does something fartarse irritating*
Friend- Oh em gee, how do you put up with him?
The Boy- Ignorance

Now, what he means is that I'm really good at ignoring him. So I think he wants to use it in the same way as Endure/Endurance etc.

Please tell me this isn't right. Something inside me just yells 'ach wrong' every time he says it. And he's been using it this way for five years now.

I tried to explain to him what the problem was but had no idea how to put it into words. So that's why I'm here, as you lot are amazing.

Or... is he right? Is this a new way of using it that no one else in the world seems to have heard of but him. Because I swear I've never heard it used this way before.

Maybe it's a Scottish thing...

Is there another word I can etch into his brain that will stop him calling me an Ignoramus?

Cheers x

 If that's the way he wants to use it, good luck to him.

Tolerance? Patience? Love? :Hug2:

Whack him with a frying pan. :snoopy:

He means 'tolerance'. He is the one who is actually ignorant because he doesn't know he means tolerance.

ETA: Assuming, of course, 'ignorance' isn't used in Scotland in that way. But I've never seen or heard it used like that and I know quite a few Scottish people. Those that are here will correct me either way.

Laiceps, have you considered simply asking him to look up the definition of irony?

At the very least, it might make you laugh. :)

Whack him with a frying pan. :snoopy:

That is cruel and inhumane. Thou shalt instead feed him with scallion pancakes until he can't move, then lay him down, cover his greasy face with a towel, and pour soda into his mouth. Ignorance is such a bliss.

Ha! Tolerance not Ignorance- whack.

Irony :)
On that note, he also says 'That needs ironed,' or, 'That needs washed.'

But I'm sure that is a Scottish thing because I've heard other Scots say it.

I think he's almost right. He's not, but he's not all too far off.

Ignorance, to me, has always meant a lack of knowledge or misheld views due to ignoring information and evidence.

Strictly speaking, ignorance simply means not knowing, or being unaware of something.

The most common connotation, however, is that you are unaware of something you should be aware of (e.g.--ignorance of the law is no excuse). There is that usage that implies a lack of sophistication or education, however, rather than deliberate obtuseness. "Those ignorant yokels didn't even know..."

No. There aren't three words like any of those. The question made me so mad I went to FAQ: How to Put Someone on Ignore(ance) and put Dawnstorm on ignoration, ignorement, and ignority -- all three. :D

If he continues to call you "IGNORAMUS"
see if he's serious about it ...
If he is, then I guess it's not worth the insult
You should be finding someone else.

Or you can talk to him about how you feel about it.
