I was saddened to hear of the passing of Nadine Gordimer, a South African writer, of whom we are inordinately proud.

Her books and short stories don't always make easy and comfortable reading for people who don't want to be reminded of the social horrors of the apartheid era, but her unflinching honesty and beautiful prose make her work so very worthy of the awards she received. It's the quietening of an important voice in our post-Mandela society, a nudging of our social conscious, that will be sorely missed.
