Vale Don Van Vliet: painter and fanatically precise bandleader with a voice like a rabid dog who'd listened to lots of Thelonious Monk and Howlin' Wolf as a pup. Try some!

I saw that earlier. I never was a huge fan, but I always hate to see another bit of my misspent youth vanish.

Yeah, I was just starting to get into his stuff more, but I enjoyed his work with Zappa. And I was wondering if a comeback was impending...

I'm more Captain and Tenille, to be honest!

But the first time I came across CB was when the Old Grey Whistle Test got taken out its graveyard slot and became the simple Whistle Test in about 1984/5?

A feature was done on the captain of the ship.

Unfortunately, there's no happy ending. Even a couple of years later when XTC, one of my faves, did Ella Guru, I still thought it was rubbish.

But he will always remind me of a particular time in my life, in a particular place.

And that, surely, is the best epitaph for an artist. Even one that couldn't sing!

NOOOOOOO. This upsets me greatly. Safe As Milk is still one of my favorite albums...
