I'm familiar with Thomas Kenneally (Schindler's List, The Playmaker), Garth Nix (Sabriel and other YA - I loved the Disreputable Dog.) and am currently reading The True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey.

Any other Aussie writers (old or new) that I should put on my reading list?

Kate Grenville; The Secret River was the best book I read last year, hands down.

Patrick White's Voss is pretty good, though it starts very slow. Though JM Coetzee may be best known as a South African, since he's relocated to South Australia...Disgrace and Diary of a Bad Year are interesting reads. A.D. Hope and Les Murray are fine poets.

Must admit I didn't much like The Secret River, but I thought Geraldine Brooks' People of the Book was an interesting read.
