I have no idea how bacteria gets into meat. I just know it's there, because that's all I need to know to handle it properly. It's not something I care about beyond the practicality of how to cook without making people sick.
Overcrowded pens leads to animals standing in their own crap, then that crap gets in the raw meat after they're slaughtered. I wish I could be a vegetarian but meat is too tasty.
