Hello everyone!
EmoteSun.gif

I'm looking for information about these three publishers:

Insomniac Press
MacAdam Cage
The Permanent Press

All three appear to have legitimate sales, but I can't find anything about them here or on P&E so I thought I'd ask before I get started on query letters/packages.

Thanks and everyone have a great day!

I can't tell you any more than this, but at least one bookstore I frequented regularly had books from these two presses.

MacAdam/Cage is one of the best indie presses in the country, and has even had bestsellers (notably "the Time-Traveller's Wife). They have a great reputation for debut authors, and are also known for standing behind their books in the long term, continuing to push their list rather than remaindering anything that doesn't sell after fice minutes on the shelves. You can find MacAdam/Cage books in any bookstore.

After looking into these sites I find that MacAdam has a long list of what they won't read. It almost eliminates most novels.

No. It's fairly clear that their emphasis is on literary fiction, not genre. Their list is full of fiction.

I'm looking at MacAdam/Cage as a possible publishing candidate. :)

Does anyone know if it's safe to get back in the water? I know they had financial problems a year or so ago. Since then, Pat Walsh, editor in chief, after a few bad acquisition decisions (and whatever else) has been replaced with Sonny Brewer, who seems to bring with him new life.

It looks to me they have weathered the storm, but I don't know the status of William Gay's much delayed, and anticipated novel.

Anyone have any recent (or past) experience with MacAdam/Cage? At one time, they were at the front of my list. From the stories I began hearing of their demise, I'm glad I waited!

Thanks!

Incidentally, I looked for them in the Index and couldn't find them. I ended up googling to find this thread. Have I gone blind? :)

Here's a recent Publishers Weekly article on their reorganization. They're now self-distributed, which I honestly think is a negative for a press that small.

I don't know. They've published some fine books in the past and had a really high quality of editing and design, but I am just not sure what the "leaner" incarnation will bring.

Another concern is the number of authors who reported delays in receiving royalty payments.

Thanks, IceCreamEmpress!

This I don't particularly warm to:

The new MacAdam/Cage is a lean business, Poindexter said, essentially a virtual company modeled after an indie film production house. Poindexter and a San Francisco assistant, plus Brewer, are the only employees. “We put together freelance teams of designers, editors, copyeditors, marketing or promotion people as we need them,” Poindexter said. “We had too much overhead before. This makes more sense and you also know just what you’re spending on each book.” MacAdam/Cage handles its own distribution and fulfillment out of a warehouse in Michigan. “We handle all the major accounts,” Poindexter said, “and independent sales reps handle everyone else.”
It's always good to cut overhead, but now they're sounding not so much like a medium-sized press anymore, which I thought they were. Before. I might send a query anyway to at least see what they say, and in the meantime do more digging. My decision will hang very much on what William Gay has decided to do. He may have gone with a different publisher by now for all I know.

I fear William Gay just passed away from a heart attack. It said last Thursday, on the right bar of their front page? How damn sad.

Gay died almost a year ago. His last novel, The Long Home, was finally published by MacAdam/Cage. The book's publication date (Sept 21, 2012) was the same week M/C was sued by Penguin and subsequently went up for sale.

MP Publishing now handling (at least some) of Mac/Cage's submissions...

What's up everybody,

This post is a response, a heads up, but with a question as well.

I submitted first 30 pages of my first novel snail mail to MacAdam Cage and got an e-mail response requesting the full...keep my fingers crossed.

But it wasn't MacAdam Cage, it was a representative from MP Publishing and she wrote informing me that my partial was forwarded to them.

Just a heads up...I researched MP Publishing and apparently they are somewhat new and out of the UK but building up their US presence and looking for American titles. Anybody know anything more about them? Anything would be appreciated.

So to get back to the subject of the previous posts...yes, with Poindexter gone MacAdam Cage is not taking on the titles they once did, apparently. But I don't know and wasn't told if that means MacAdam Cage is in the process of closing up shop completely.

From the article:

"At the time of his death, Poindexter was negotiating the sale of the company, plans that his family said will continue, although no details were announced."

MP Publishing basically started as the UK e-publishing arm of MacAdam/Cage. I did not have a good experience with MP. They e-published my M/C novel (in 2010) before M/C had even given me a contract. Worse, it was an unedited version. Representatives of MP claimed it was M/C's fault, which was believable, since M/C was rudderless by that time and the target of lawsuits from authors. M/C did not correct the problem with my book, and I had to personally inform MP that they were illegally publishing a book without a contract, that I had no idea who they even were, and they did finally take my book off their list. My problems with M/C worsened and I finally withdrew my book from that company and ended my relationship with them.

I do not know the official legal relationship between M/C and MP. MP does have a branch in the US now, I believe. Good luck & keep your eyes very wide open.
