Wait... is it Soapy who steals the nachos?
Now, I'm confuzzled.
No, see, the nachos are mine. All of them. ALL the nachos.

And it's YOU who steal the nachos! Look in the mirror, Sparkles!!!!

Great.

Now I'll ruin Ted's experiment if I steal the nachos. :e2bummed:

Awww!

Okay, so I'm trying to figure something out. I'm not the smarted turd in the bowl, I know, but when a magazine says "No child abuse" does that mean you can't allude to it or foreshadow it?

I've got this flash fiction piece I want to sub, but it's got kids in it and they're being set up for an ugly whammy by an evil lady.

Nobody gets hurt. We leave that to the reader's imagination. But I don't know if that qualifies as abuse or not.

that's a hard one, Ted. I struggle with that question often. I tend to just look for another market. I think I error on the side of being overly cautious.

But, I also know that that sort of a statement has to be made because otherwise? (especially in the horror genre) the slush pile ends up full of a LOT of stuff that is not well written stories, but platforms for people to write hateful things, pornography, and more.

I think, if it's a horror mag, they are expecting unsettling things. And as long as the harm to the children happens off screen, or even better is only implied, you might be ok to sub anyway.

Even still, I tend to look to the mags that say they take anything, no subjects off limits.

Have someone(s) read it and let them weigh in on how strongly it comes across.

I don't know if any of that is helpful.

I think there's a difference between a kid's adventure gone wrong and abuse - you know what I mean?

Like Hansel and Gretle I wouldn't call abuse, I'd call more horror.

@ Ted A lot of people err on the side of caution, but if your piece otherwise fits what they're looking for, why not submit it? The worst they could do is reject it, right?

And I would totally bring my cat back in. Cats still have 9 lives, right? It's not a zombie unless it comes back after losing the last one. Right?

Out of all of King's books, out of all the horror books I have ever read, this remains the only one I ever had to put down because it was creeping me out.

About halfway through, when he's making the burial arrangements and you just know what's coming next...

Took me a week before I could pick it back up.

Ah, so you didn't see Hansel and Gretel: Witchhunters, then?

Probably for the best.

:D

(Actually, going in knowing that it was going to be bad meant I could enjoy it for what it was. ... And it was bad.)

But...how do you see what you're doing?

I would think half the fun would be seeing the results of all your mayhem causing.

Oh, you'll see it. patience is a virtue.

Now, about your son. It's my considered mayhem-dominated opinion that he's probably reviewing the local rights of successon and inheritance, lining up politic factions and allies and planning on replacing the current liege.

or it could be i've just been watching too much go LETELY.

A dark, evil place.
Big difference between Pet Sematary book and Pet Sematary movie in terms of the ending. The movie was much kinder.

ETA: I actually visited the hospital King used for that story. It was in Bridgeton, Maine, if I recall correctly. The volunteers in the cafeteria made me eat two pieces of Maine blueberry pie. That's the price I had to pay for being a Road Warrior in the Northeastern US for five or so years.

Plus, you know, Lobstah.

ETA: Correction. That was the hospital he used for Cujo. Similar outcome for the child.
