I'm a military brat, so I don't remember my original home very well, but my favorite home was in Spain.
I've done a lot of fanfic to find my voice and/or practice writing. My main interest, I suppose, is historical, with contemporary running a close second. I dabbled in fantasy with Harry Potter fic for a long time, sci-fi with Star Trek fic.
Perhaps someday I'll have an original story that just needs telling, but for now, I'm pretty content to (slowly) write in other peoples' universes.

The armpit of Texas, does that apply to the whole state or just a certain part? Myself, I would say it defines the whole state. Although, I have met many nice people there.
There are a lot of writer's who started out in fan fiction. There's a lot to be said for practicing. Sometimes, someone else's words give you the kick start you need.
