A vast peat bog, between 100,000 and 200,000 square kilometers in area, up to 7 meters deep, and thousands of years old, was recently discovered in Congo-Brazzaville.

The bog was spotted by satellite and confirmed with an expedition last month by a discovery team from the University of Leeds, the Wildlife Conservation Society-Congo and Congo-Brazzaville's Marien Ngouabi University.

Peat bogs are major carbon sinks, and cores taken from this bog should give vital information about the Earth's climate and carbon storage properties in the past.

That is some fair sized muskeg there. That is like if Lake Athabasca or Williston Lakes turned into muskeg. o_o

Wasn't there just a newly discovered rainforest in Africa?

I understand parts of the world can be remote, but we've had satellites with cameras pointing down for 40-50 years, and digital imaging for almost half that. Google knows if most of us park our cars on the street or in a driveway! [/luddite rant]

Very cool discovery though...

The thing is.... satellites can send back enough data to keep researchers going for years. So the discoveries happen when someone has time to go through it all. That's why we have projects like Galaxy Zoo.
