Or at least I used to be. Now I spend more time reading about writing and wishing I could write then actually writing.

I'm hoping that being around here, where people actually write and finish things, will help inspire me and get my mojo running again. I have plenty of ideas and super cool characters, but when I sit down and try to get the scenes out of my head and into my computer, I get nothing.

So instead of staring at a blank screen, I'm concentrating on organizing my ideas and putting together notebooks for each of them. I'm starting small with the hope that doing this will get me past this weird block that I have. Or maybe I'm using the notebooks as a productive way of wasting time. I'm not really sure. :tongue

Either way, I look forward to participating in the various threads around the board and reading about everyone's amazing progress.

It's our pleasure to have you here. It's okay to just dip a toe in the water, writing-wise. There's a thread on writing prompts and exercises someplace, and a bunch more which post a weekly challenge prompt, some that propose so many words a day for a whole month, and others where you log your writing every weekend.

Ease back into it, perhaps, by talking with others who do your genre. Read some of what people have posted at your genre's Share Your Work (SYW) board. Write a paragraph about a character you might use? Just a paragraph, and it doesn't have to be the main character. Just the waiter or the urchin boy or the alien glimpsed but no more is fine.

Reading about writing is good, however, no substitute for writing as I'm sure you know. I improved so much between my trunked novel and my current one that I am a new man ;)

Thanks for the welcomes!

@Maryn - Thanks for the ideas, I will definitely venture into the threads you mentioned. I've been lurking for awhile, but never thought to go much further than the General Writing area. By the way, how did you know I needed a cookie?

@Harry - Don't apologize, Robin Hood is my favorite Disney cartoon.

Hi PJ! May I recommend NaNoWriMo to you? It changed me from a "wishing I was writing" person to a "writing WIP while querying other novel" person. Do you know, I actually *enjoy* writing most of the time, now? This is a huge change for me. I have done NaNo 3 times. The 1st and 2nd time it was a hard slog, but this third novel (the one I'm still writing the first draft of), is like it used to be years and years ago when I first started writing for fun. The process of doing NaNo made all the difference, I'm convinced.

In case you are unfamiliar with it, NaNoWriMo is explained here:

Hi there, and welcome to AW. I guess there are moments in your life when you don't feel like writing. Generally it's not a problem, unless you're contracted to write one/two/three books a year. It's happened to me too, but right now I try to finish one book a year.

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the ‘forum jump’ you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. Most of the SYW areas require the password of ….vista. A word to the wise, (50 posts), it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

@Maryn - <snip> By the way, how did you know I needed a cookie?
I operate on the assumption that everybody needs a cookie. Works pretty well, too.
