We haven't had any coyotes around for years now. They've built houses and schools on what used to be open prarie and now all we get is the occasional fox - and a bajillion rabbits.Hopefully it wasn't.
And coyotes kept me awake lastnight, howling to the warm sky, probably happy for the heatwave we're getting.

A bitter conflict in the coyote community is escalating. From mid-January to mid-March, depending on where you live, coyotes are locked in a territorial battle for the right to breed. Mating season mayhem is upon us.
Maybe they're noisy little buggers all year round, but according to a quick google, it is mating season.
So be careful. They're probably twice as dangerous when they're horny.
