Phew! Well that didn't take long! I'd never heard about the cameo appearance connection so that really threw me. Thought it must be an American series.

Colin Dexter himself appears (mostly uncredited) in all but 3 of the twenty-something TV films, typically just "walking past while chatting in a street scene" or something of the kind. In some of them, he's seen as a presumed Fellow of "Lonsdale College, Oxford" and in one he's heard saying a particularly florid Latin "Grace" before a college dinner. He became a close friend of John Thaw.
