The only one on the list that I've read is The Road.

I gave up on Jonathan Franzen after the first few pages -- just not my "thing".

I've read a half dozen of Philip Roth's books but decided (after being disappointed by American Pastoral) that it's time for me and Phil to call it quits.

Denis Johnson's Tree of Smoke is on my want-to-read list although I read his novella Train Dreams and thought it was absolutely freekin' awful.

The Peter Carey novel seems like it might be up my alley; I'll look into it.

I'm greatly disappointed that The Fortress of Solitude doesn't appear to be about Superman. The one about the Kelly Gang looks interesting though. My mom got halfway through The Road and found it to depressing to carry on--I imagine I'd have the same reaction to it.

Honestly a bit surprised not to see any Chabon (Kavalier and Klay?), Safran-Foer, amongst others.

(Also obvious that they're going with their own people with the Wells Towers pick, who -- although an excellent writer -- is employed by the magazine. Handful of young writers you could put in his place. I think I would have gone with Joshua Ferris before him.)
