I don't know that anyone has mentioned Nigel Tranter. His Scottish novels are marvelously researched. I particularly recommend the Bruce Trilogy.
Edit: I personally do not recommend his novel on Wallace though. Wallace is such an iconic figure in the thinking of Scots that he is difficult to portray imo. Tranter doesn't get past that problem as he does with Bruce.
However, there is almost no period in Scottish history that Tranter didn't write about in his long career.
Tranter's work rarely contains any obscenities for anyone who is concerned with that and the sex is mostly off-stage. However, he wrote about violent times and he wasn't, for the most part, a romance writer.
