Behavior in schools that I've helped in has been astonishing. People love to complain about public schools, and I've certainly done my fair share, but the biggest problem with schools seems to be a lack of parenting.

Sometimes it feels more like a zoo than a school. I have, hand to heaven, actually heard a mother say of her fit-taking, uncooperative little monster, "I just am so glad he's in school now, because I just can't discipline him."

From what I've heard from teachers, some parents' idea of being involved and supporting their kids is to march down to the school and threaten them.

I think the reason I survived high school was a combination of good teachers and good parents. I think it's a tangled combination of shitty administration, shitty pay driving away all but the saints and the losers, shitty equipment, and parents who have been raised in this system passing on their screwed upedness to their kids.
