As on homage to Leonard Nimoy, I watched Them, the 1954 flick starring Edmund Gwenn. It's not Nimoy's first film and he had just a bit part, but it was a fun watch to see the city of LA take on giant ants and win.

That was one of my all-time favorite Saturday afternoon movies!!! That, and The Incredible Shrinking Man. And The Long Ships, with Richard Widmark.

Last flick I watched was, um . . . rats, now I gots Richard Widmark on da brain.

:)

Barbara Steele's An Angel for Satan. So unintentionally funny. Steele gets possessed by a witch who makes her wear exaggerated makeup, seduce every male and female in sight, and beat people about the face with riding crops. :Wha:

Definitely one of her weirder movies. Quite enjoyable (and no squishy bits are shown; lots of creative editing).

Finally watched You're Next. Wow. I mean, WOW. Sharni Vinson is the female Bruce Campbell I was hoping for in the Evil Dead remake. She is a BADASS. Yeah, this movie's awesome.

I watched the "director's cut" of THX1138 once, and found it overlong and meadery. Still a fascinating piece of cinema history--you can see the seeds of Star Wars being planted. Wonder if the theatrical cut is worth tracking down...

Last watched: Tusk. Had high expectations, was more goofy than scary, the "body horror" elements were . . . well, I dunno what I was expecting exactly, but the whole surgical procedure seemed to over rather sooner than I thought it would be? Kevin Smith needs to un-clever his dialogue and cut it WAY back, because this was super-talky in ways that made my mind wander. Good ideas, could use more polish and better pacing. Also I barely recognized Haley Joel Osment, but really liked his character even before I figured out who he was.

Jupiter Ascending. I am part of the small but loud people who liked that.

I thought it was entertaining. Large doses of WTFery, but it looked great. They easily could have cut the action scenes by half or better--those seemed to go on forever. I actually started to nod off during the first one in Chicago.

When Pigs have Wings

You know you picked a good movie when a Gaza Strip resident has a little boy buy Viagra for him so he can better "milk" his pig, the cop thinks it's medicine and drinks it, and gets addicted.

For some unfathomable reason, I watched Hot Tub Time Machine. (Okay, not so unfathomable. It's because Sebastian Stan is in it.) I'm glad my expectations were low going in. It was, as I thought it would be, incredibly stupid, but also pretty funny.

I watched Tusk recently as well, and I found it mostly... awkward. I agree with your points on pacing and polish because the concept was unique and it could've been much better.

I just watched Pan's Labyrinth. It was great, there should be more like it.

Saw St. Vincent. Excellent movie and it should have been nominated for Best Picture. Funny scenes but also some very sensitive, touching moments.

Also saw The Judge. Good movie but I felt as if I've seen this story before.

Ghost Train (J-horror). Fairly average offering. Good background noise to write by.

I have an ongoing disconnect with all many asian horror movies: A family member disappears-child, wife, husband, brother, sister, etc. and the family doesn't freak out. They carry on with their lives as though by doing so the missing person will just slide back into the routine.

:Wha:

I see it over and over. It's usually subtle. Kairo had a character that actually said, after 3-4 people went poof (paraphrase): "No. Don't call or go over to their house. If we just keep working, everything will be fine."

:Wha:

Nightcrawler. Pretty decent psychological piece, but it could have used some more dedicated editing and a bigger threat to Gyllenhaal's character. Plus, it was a LOT of Gyllenhaal.

The Humbling, based on Phiip Roth's novel, screenplay by Buck Henry, starring Al Pacino and the utterly charming Greta Gerwig.
