Are there any writers on the planet who *aren't* AWers? Michael, I think you just opened to submissions again <grin>.

I think there might be a few, how else to explain that PublishAmerica and others of that ilk still exist?

I wouldn't mind a few submissions.

I'd like to second the thanks for being so professional and so open with your answers. I don't tend to read erotica, but your responses here have made me go take a look at your website and I'm going to be making a couple of purchases out of interest. If you hadn't come across so well here that wouldn't have happened, and I'm sure I can't be the only person doing this. Kudos.

Thank you for your nice remarks.

We love new customers!

We don't just publish erotic stories. We've also published some non-erotic stories, mostly horror but we do have a scifi story and a lot of fantasy titles.

Do you guys sell novels/stories through Amazon? I can't seem to find a story I want of yours on Amazon, and I'd prefer to buy it through there for my Kindle.

Amazon takes an egregious cut of the cover price leaving very little for the publisher or author. We'd only net 35% of the cover price and on a book that sells for $2.50--which is roughly half of our catalog--that's peanuts.

At this time we don't offer formatting for the Kindle from any site where we sell books, but we are looking into adding that format in the future.

Out of all the people, publishers, editors, and such alike, michael_b is the only one I've seen as of yet to be professional and not defensive.

I, personally, prefer to have the book in my hand as opposed to reading it in digital format. I do own a nook, however, since it's digital ink technology is much like a book and the books are cheaper. This may be why I'd prefer my books published in paper; I find the feel of it helps me fall into the book easier, rather than worry about dropping or hurting a $150 machine.

I do not write erotica, but, if in a 550,000 word series, the plot call for a heavy and hot sex scene, I'll write it, and have. It's still unpublished, though. Haha.

That only means that you don't know that some of the people whose posts you're reading are publishers, editors, and such. Several of the frequent posters in the BR&BC threads are these very types of people and they, too, are always professional and never defensive. Priceless1 and HapiSofi spring to mind, and I know there are quite a few others. Oh, like KingM and Jennifer Laughran down in the Ask an Agent forum. :)

Having seen this business from both sides of the coin, I try to be as helpful to authors as I can, both from the perspective of a fellow author and as a publisher. There's really no need to be defensive if you're not trying to hide something.

Everyone would like to see their books in hardcopy print but sadly it looks more and more as if print will soon be the exception rather than the rule as the entire publishing industry is teetering on the brink of major change in how they do business. I know there are people here that will disagree, but I've been watching the trends and a lot of publishers and authors are seeing the writing on the wall. Print is failing and ebooks will soon be the norm, rather than the 'new kid on the block.'

Shadowfire Press has actually published a couple book series that are over 300,000 words across several books. One series is now pushing 450,000 words. Neither of these series are romances, and one has no erotic content at all.

I won't say sales of those series are huge, the price of the books is at the upper end of the spectrum, but people who have bought them have apparently liked them enough to come buy each book as it comes out.

Tell me, have you decided whether to sell on Amazon yet?

I ask because I am extremely interested in subbing.

It is being considered but I'm still undecided on whether it's a good move for the company. A large number of our books are in the $2.50 range and Amazon gives terrible percentages on books at that length.

Hi Azacher,

I think your question got ported to the correct thread. But just in case you can't see it. Here it is: <snipped>

Shadowfire is a good company. Michael, the publisher is a frequent poster on AW. After reading over the thread, if you have any other questions, feel free to ask me or post here. :D

Good luck! -- Jamie

I do know ShadowFire recently downsized a bit-they released many of their authors from their contracts back in July.

Their submission guidelines haven't changed on their website, but I would be surprised if they didn't change sometime in the near future.

Non-selling authors and those with expiring contracts dating back to 2008 and 2009 were, primarily, the reason for the 'downsize'.

The submission guidelines will not be changed. We will close to all submissions when we get to the Holiday Season--late November to January 5th--which we always do so our staff can spend time with their families and enjoy the holidays. I am still looking for authors, preferably those with a proven track record or willingness to commit their time to a connected series of books. Series titles seem to do the best with our readers, especially among the m/m crowd.

Question

Hey, anyone know where I can find a print listing of Shadowfire's submission email?

The link to the Microsoft Explorer won't work for me.

Michael, for those asking- are you currently open to subs? Several posts back you mention being closed from late November to Jan 5 each year for the holidays (I assume this is on your site).

I haven't closed just yet. I had a slew of submissions come in and I'm still wading through those. Got some really great stuff too!

I'll probably wait until December 15th to shut down for the Holidays. (I'm usually in the office until the eve of Christmas Eve anyway. I let everyone else go home earlier. LOL)

Just a quick FYI update: I've been getting a lot of YA submissions and we don't publish, or plan to publish, any YA.

I am looking for more erotic and sensual romance, both heterosexual and GLBTQ with a preference toward paranormal and paranormal scifi. Paranormal series do pretty well with us.

Contemporaries are best sent to other publishers, our readership isn't interested in them.

Just letting everyone know we are currently closed to submissions due entirely to the current kerfluffle with Paypal. While they haven't flagged our account, it's probably only a matter of time.

We'll reopen to submissions when we can find another payment processing service that doesn't lump us in with porn sites.

If you are unfamiliar with the tidal wave running through the erotic romance/erotica publishers and distributors take a trip here for some good blog commentary by another publisher/author.
