Well dang, I miss all the fun.
The fun ain't over yet. Plenty can still be done before they vote and we can't give up the ship yet, but I've got more than a sneakin' suspicion we're gonna lose this one. :e2drown:

I made my voice heard. Well, I tried. Haggis has a nice link in his sig.

Sent my "letter" to Congress about it.

This is the U, S, of A...darnit!

Who knows, maybe they'll listen, even though they rarely listen to us about anything. There's always a first time for everything, you know?

Well, it used to be the U S of A, but more and more....

But I do like your optimism.

I just received this message from one of my fellow activists:

Hi everyone!

A big hurrah to you!!!!! We’ve won for now -- SOPA and PIPA were dropped by Congress today -- the votes we’ve been scrambling to mobilize against have been cancelled.

The largest online protest in history has fundamentally changed the game. You were heard.

On January 18th, 13 million of us took the time to tell Congress to protect free speech rights on the internet. Hundreds of millions, maybe a billion, people all around the world saw what we did on Wednesday. See the amazing numbers here and tell everyone what you did.

This was unprecedented. Your activism may have changed the way people fight for the public interest and basic rights forever.

The MPAA (the lobby for big movie studios which created these terrible bills) was shocked and seemingly humbled. “‘This was a whole new different game all of a sudden,’ MPAA Chairman and former Senator Chris Dodd told the New York Times. ‘[PIPA and SOPA were] considered by many to be a slam dunk.’”

“'This is altogether a new effect,' Mr. Dodd said, comparing the online movement to the Arab Spring. He could not remember seeing 'an effort that was moving with this degree of support change this dramatically' in the last four decades, he added."

Thanks for the update Russ. BUt I think you need to provide a link to what you are quoting...just so we don't have to go through this again. :)

I haven't lately, but I like to visit the P&CE board here and discuss politics, but I generally avoid it face to face with people. I especially avoid it at work- which bugs me becuase many people at work assume everyone else here agrees with them, and I don't, but I don't want to make waves because I want to keep working here. I am not afraid of getting fired or anything, but I want to be on speaking terms with my coworkers, y'know?

Does anybody else have the common experience that people who like you assume you agree with their sociopolitical views? Happens to me fairly often.

Well, as often as I'm liked, anyway. Less and less as hermit-me takes over the lifeform.

Thanks for the update Russ. I haven't had the chance to check that today yet. Go internet power!

Yeah, it really sucks when someone I like disagrees with me once I find out their views on something. It means I'm not allowed to like them anymore. :D Their loss, ya know? *snicker*

Oh, sassy, I'm sorry, go through what? I'm not sure what you mean. If you mean the long text about SOPA, it wasn't a link to anything, it was an email I received. And I figured any information about SOPA and PIPA is pretty easily Googled for the few who may not know about it, as it's been all over the news for quite a while. Work with me here--how can I help?

[The problem she's referring to involves users quoting others at length without giving attribute. That's copyright violation, of course. Mac prefers that we paraphrase a brief summary and provide a link to the original. 'nuf said.]

So, how is everybody's Saturday going? Mine's good. I finished an overdue critique of something which was quite good but not perfect, submitted something (woohoo!), and shoveled snow. I managed not to call out to the young couple with the realtor, entering the house for sale across the street, that many of the workmen doing the repairs appeared to drink on the job, not one drove a vehicle less than 15 years old or one with a logo indicating they were pros, and that they did not do proper mold abatement for a house with major water damage. Not good signs.

If I see them come back without the realtor, though, I might go speak to them.

ETA: I was interrupted while writing this--I just learned I won a 2-page play contest. Woo-hoo!

ok so Leela responds when I call Hoshi, but not when I call her. ;)

I think you should tell the couple, even with the realtor...I don't know. I have idiot neighbors and I feel like I should call thesherriff on them occasionally but haven't. they cut down trees in teh lot next to our houses, that isn't thiers to cut, and they've had a bon fire there too. How did I get on this subject?

Yes, of course, where is my mind these days? As there was private communication after that in the email, I just copied the relevant portion from the top, which of course lost her sig at the bottom. And as I said, there's nothing to link to--email, ya know. Apologies everyone, and I will edit my post to include the sender's name. Thanks for the catch, Sassy, Maryn.

So, who's got plans for Saturday night? We are--hold onto your hats, ladies and gentlemen--watching a DVD! Astonishing, yes? And it's entirely possible that we we also snack at some point, while watching!

Mr. Groove's friend came over and we watched shows he can't because he doesn't have cable or satallite, and then we watched a movie and a show he brought. I cleaned a little in the middle, they went out to get lunch and brought me some...and I watched the idiot neighbors - they locked thier keys in their car, which would be funny but a dog was in it. I kept my eye out, it's cool today, but the sun was out for a while. I went to check my mail to have an excuse to go out and chatted with the guy a minute. If i knew how to break into cars I would have helped.... They finally got in, I didn't see how. Now we're going to the bookstore to see if they have Callalilly's new book.

How nice, that you're on the hunt for Lily's book. I haven't hit the local stores yet, but since I'm quite near her and the B&N where she lives had it, I have hopes mine will, too.

Maryn, just a wee bit buzzed and enjoying it

Maryn, which DVD are you watching this evening? Sass, we live in an apartment building. Idiot neighbors? Ha! Too many too count.

I didn't realize Lily's book had hit the shelves. I remember the first time I saw an AW author's book that I recognized in the bookstore when I first joined AW. It was the coolest find.

I was supposed to hang with friends today, but I think I'm coming down with flu. My mom was sick this past week and now it's my turn. Bah humbug.

I'm not feeling that bad right now, and I'm even thinking of ordering pizza later. The question is, will it stay in my stomach after I eat it later? (I know, ewww) I'm so hungry!

I don't really have any severe flu symptoms but I am getting "waves" here and there. Sigh. I hate getting sick, mostly because I don't get sick that often.

I've been writing a lot lately. I finally went to my first writers meeting not far from where I live at a local library and it was great. Now that I have a laptop, I am writing more now then ever before. It's really nice. I was really nervous about showing them some of my writing since I haven't shown anyone stuff in years. I was pleasantly surprised that they not only liked my writing, they want me to bring more to the next meeting and my grammar isn't that bad after all. (Well, ok, it still needs work..heh)

So, if it weren't for the flu bug, it would have been a good week overall. :)

Hi all, it's been a while. Been a very productive day - nothing like being snowbound to really motivate one to do work. Though shoveling snow and buying red wine was unavoidable.
As I shoveled, about 3 people came by asking to shovel for $20. That never happens around here...I felt bad turning them down because I need the physical activity (and the $20) pretty badly. Especially since today I booked my spring vacation, so I'm gonna be hardup for money until next payday. But it's very much worth it :).
Maryn, well done with the contest! Is your play going to be staged soon?

The play will be read on January 31, after a brief rehearsal that afternoon. The dramaturg (love that word) adored that I can work around other people's schedules and suggested she just pencil me in wherever I fit and let me know. Apparently getting playwright and performer together for rehearsal time is something like playing Tetris with a blindfold.

We tried to watch "Hustle and Flow" last night, but the DVD, which looked pristine, wouldn't play past a certain point in two DVD players and one laptop. We've only had this Netflix account about a month, and this is the second time we've had a damaged disk. I hope this is atypical. Anyway, we ended up watching "Breaker Morant," which was good but depressing.

Tonight we're going to the thea-tah, dahlings! I'm not all that excited about the play, which looks fine but not outstanding, but I do like having the occasion to dress up. Those are hard to come by.

Maryn, who has a cool new skirt

Good luck with that, and hope you enjoy the play tonight! And don't give up on Netflix - I've rented a few dozen discs over the years and I've had a total of two come in damaged. Of course, my tastes run very obscure so mine don't come in very used :) There's also the streaming option if you have a compatible device or a computer with decent RAM.

As well you should! That totally rocks! Congratulations!

Do I hear champagne-bottle corks popping and the clinking of glasses?

The payday I anticipate would not buy a champagne I would drink--and I'm not all that fussy. Which is not to say I'm displeased, just that I'd be equally pleased if the payment were a teensy token.

Maryn, who thinks it might be $20

Is that before or after taxes? See, that's what I'm always telling people, we write because of the big bucks!

It's still awesome, Maryn.

Good morning, everyone! We have a weird day, for January--it's supposed to hit 50, with high winds. How very March-like.

It does not, however, excuse me from the various house-and-errand crap which has once again piled up. I have to go umpteen places, make phone calls (which I dread all out of proportion to how bad it is), and do a bunch of Ee-e-ew-level cleaning of places which have gone beyond I-can-live-with-that.

Wish me strength!
