Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum and am hoping for some helpful insight.

I have written and self published a book already and recently I have been asked by an acquaintance to write a book with him.

Basically, he will be providing me with the information and necessary images, and I'll be doing everything on the publishing side - from writing it up, getting it print ready, designing the cover, and planning a marketing campaign.

I am a little confused about the monetary side of things.

Are we 50/50? Shall I just provide him with a commission? or maybe I only get a commission? I know payment up front is not an option. I will be doing much more work that he will, but it is his knowledge and not mine.

Logically I am thinking of splitting everything 50/50. Costs, commission, etc. However, I don't want to cut either of us short.

Any input on this would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

There are many different ways you can set this up, and I'm not going to comment on that.

I'll just say this one thing: Put everything in writing, and get a lawyer who specialises in intellectual property (IP) law to draw up the contract.

I really REALLY can't stress this enough: A contract. Drawn up by a properly qualified lawyer.

GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING.

Oh, and in case I haven't been clear: GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING.

You don't want to know how I know.

Not only that, but get everything in writing before you write another word.

Oh my! Make sure you get everything in writing-everything. No matter if it is a good friend or not have an attorney go over it and give you details on your rights and his/her rights, the payment, marketing the whole deal!

Be careful there are lots of scammers out there and they are like blood hounds they can sniff you out miles away!
