Over at the Atlantic, Ta-Nehisi Coates has been reading and writing about the American Civil War (AKA the War Between the States). He recently asked a "dumb question" about the purpose of marching, formations, etc. And his readers reply with interesting facts and references that might be useful to folks writing about the 19th century military.

Bitten by the Civil War bug, he's written a series of pieces looking at the war and slavery and I expect more to come. Unfortunately, the Atlantic Monthly site doesn't use tags, so you will have to scroll through the archives to find them.
