Got my HNS Newsletter email the other day, with a list of reviews of new historical novels.

Along with the usual later 1800s and 1930s fare, I saw a couple of stories which seemed very different:

The Gathering Night by Margaret Elphinstone, set in 6150 BC
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-e...ng-night-by-margaret-elphinstone-1696219.html

and

Warrior Daughter by Janet Paisley, set on the Isle of Skye as BC turns into AD
http://entertainment.timesonline.co...ainment/books/book_reviews/article6394918.ece (Although I'm NOT a fan of a phrase used to describe the climax here)

There's also a non-fiction book that sounds like a ton of fun - Legionary: The Roman Soldier's Manual by Philip Matyszack

Gotta run to work (yes, on Saturday while my WIP languishes) I hope everyone is having a relaxing weekend (and writing!).

Edited to Add: Ack - I didn't realize the links didn't work. Fixed.

Janet Paisley's last book was a big thud for me. Full of sex and it seemed thats about it. Interesting premise, poor execution(in my opinion). At one point we had the MC not want to marry a man then suddenly she was lusting after him????? Ok......

Wow, these all look marvelous! Thanks for sharing the links. I'm a huge fan of "ancient history" novels, so I'm definitely going to read The Gathering Night. In fact, I think I'll hit the book store today and see if I can't find it.

Do you have a link to HNS? I'd like to join but a Google search was unsuccessful for me (probably because I'm only guessing at what the acronym means.)

Margaret Elphinstone is an auto-buy in hardcover for me. I can count those on one hand. I can't wait for it, and I recommend everything she ever wrote.

That should help you sign up for the newsletter. Good luck!
