Hello everyone,

As you may have guessed, I'm new to the forum. I'm actually more of an aspiring editor than a writer. I came across this forum while googling something about how to become an editor / get an editor position and stumbled on an archived thread from this site.

I'm currently a college junior in Baltimore. Right now, I'm applying to internships: one for a news site, and one for a city planning organization as their writer/editor/PR intern. I'm trying to familiarize myself with the AP and Chicago style manuals, and am also working on getting a blog up and running. I have hopes to one day become a book editor, particularly for non-fiction or sci-fi.

I would love a mentor or any advice in regards to becoming an editor. I also have writing interests (just not as a career), and enjoy nonfiction or epic novels. I'm excited to be part of such a vibrant community.

Being an editor. *Cringes and holds head* I couldn't stand a day of that... okay, I could (something about editing gets to me after a while), but dear lord I'd have the worse trouble with dealing with it.

Welcome!

Any aspiring editor's services would be more than welcome on the Share Your Work boards. Good way for you to gain experience, too, maybe! ;)

In any case, welcome to the forums.

An excellent suggestion! I'm a freelance editor and that's where I learned my dubious skills. :D

One of my good friends is a professional editor who has dedicated a good part of his days to helping aspiring editors. His name is John and you can find your way to him via twitter, @awesome_john. He has a wonderful website with lots of tips and motivational musings too.

Good luck and welcome to the boards!

Ursae,

Welcome to the boards and hope your stay is enjoyable.

The one thing I have learned editors, is that they come in all different skill sets, good and bad. Keep in mind that journalistic editing is a lot different than editing for fiction or academic journals.

If you can find a publisher that will take you on as an intern, vs a news channel, go with the publisher, if that is where you want to go in the future. Many start out as readers for publishers and work their way up to editing.

Good luck...
