The writing is a bit academic-formal. But, Heck, if I can make sense out of engineering & scientific writing it should be a piece of cake!

...do schools not teach the 5-part play (a la Shakespeare) structure anymore? Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Denouement.

I learned that in high school and it's stuck with me ever since. Modern (western) genre fiction tends to like to have the climax, falling action, and denoeument much closer together, less exposition, and the rising action to have peaks and valleys, but the overall form is still very much present in western genre fiction.

I'm not sure why this structure comes as such a shock to be honest...? Or was my (public school) education unique?
