I'm withdrawing my submission. I got an R&R from an agent, and I'm restructuring my beginning. Does anyone know what email address I should contact? Just the voyagersubmissions one?

Oh dear, why are you withdrawing? Anything to do with the agent is incidental to the sale of a MS, it does not guarantee a sale. I have friends who have had their stores for YEARS with agents, and not one sale.

Just show HV the restructured start if they bite.

Fae, they truly don't want 'em over 120K, and in fact 90-100K is the safest zone to be. It would be a shame if you're losing out, not because you're not talented, but because the word count is the first thing they see and they're rejecting it out of hand. I've been there. My MS is now 99K, but three years ago it was nearly 180K. Same story, now shorter and much, much better. Avast ye scurvy adjectives and extraneous scenes!

And I second treehouse's remark.

Sorry to hear Specialfae.

Andrea, a R&R does not mean they will sign you either. I had a friend get 5 R&R's from the same agent and in the end they still said no.

I R&Rd this very MS last year. I paid many thousands for a professional editor, made it over from scratch, spent 6 months on the job, and then the agent, who had been all warm and fuzzy back when it sucked said, "Buh-bye!"

As a devout Yog's Law-ist, I find this ...unsettling. :D

Still, I am fully tolerant to other belief systems.

So, can you see through the bottom of the whiskey bottle yet?

(i feel your pain, but mask it behind humour)

She was worth every penny, believe me, Paul. I literally owned her soul for 5 months+. Emails and phone calls all day long 5 days a week. I would chat with her via email at midnight. If you knew how fast I work at revisions and new scenes, you would know what a pain in her a$$ I truly was. She is now a good friend. This is the best professional step I ever took, and I will never regret it.

No whisky tonight.....it's Margarita Night!
(Oh, and the whisky's in the jar.)

AndreaGS--I strongly suggest you reconsider withdrawing your submission. You have absolutely nothing to lose by letting HV consider it, even if you're discussing a possible revision with an agent. Until you get an OFFER from the agent, your manuscript is unagented, and you're still eligible. Why bail now when you've waited this long? If the agent offers you representation down the road and you still haven't heard one way or another, you'll have the option to withdraw at that point. Why do it now, and remove any chance of HV saying "yes"?

Paul: yes! exactly! I am a harsh task-master/mistress....hmm, no matter how you word that, it somehow sounds wrong.

And I second td's remark.

And return lols cannot be typed on a tiny smartphone screen when drinking tequila in a dim restaurant.

AndreaGS,

I would not withdraw. An R&R does not mean the agent will sign you afterwards.

But if you do, please let me know so I can close your submission as withdrawn...

Hmmm, going to need a new color for that one. Maybe Puce...

I would agree. I've toyed with turning it into two books, not as easy as it seems I know. I've went through it over and over wondering if it was possible to knock off 5 chapters and got threats from my 'readers'. lol

So, looks like I'll be rolling up my sleeves and turning the four book series into a five book series, once my slightly bruise ego heals that is. ;)

Specialfae: The problem with 'readers' is that they are often too gentle because they want to be supportive and not hurt your feelings. And considering the volume of words you mentioned, chopping 5 chapters may not be nearly enough. Are you in a writers' group? Do you know someone brutally honest enough to evaluate your work? I got a writing buddy about a year ago and we shred each other mercilessly, though always with humor. Perhaps a fresh set of eyes can help you either to condense the story in half or decide where to split it. (Been there--it's rough!!)

I need to find me someone like that I think. lol I let the readers read it just to see if anyone would actually read it. They gave me feed back, told me where I slipped now and then and asked me questions (why did you do that...) but not as a writer.

I figured they were the ultimate, end user. Now I realize I need someone who knows the writer/editor/publish part to help me with the in between phase.

I've joined another thread here that has said the same thing, so I guess I need to find the thread that will help me find someone to exchange some help that way.

This place is awesome :)

Morning guys. Andrea is part of the same online writers group as me, and she's got well-thought our reasons for withdrawing -- her planned revision changes the story significantly. Worry not, she knows what she's doing. :)

I've withdrawn my novel from the late stages of an Open Door submission before due to an R&R and it was definitely worth it. A good R&R can completely change a story for the better, and it made my old version look like a mess in comparison.

Has anyone ever noticed that agent rejections almost always occur on Fridays lately? I've even started keeping stats on this phenomenon. Anyway, I got a sharp wake-up call today, dag nab it.

I am coming up with the following after clarifying a few multiple submission in which only 1 was rejected...

35 rejections
04 still in review,
01 withdrawn by author
64 still waiting for a response.
____

104 total...

Still waiting outnumbers the rejections and in review by a double margin. But if you look at the HV numbers, rejections far outnumber the still in review and waiting. Unsure what this means for the AW members, but it is interesting...

Looking at Omnigon's list, the question might be, how frequent the non-responders visit AW. Michael P emailed most of 'em, brought a few to the surface, but what 'bout the rest. huh?

(Imagine a Deliverance type accent when reading the previous bit)

But anyway, that might explain the discrepancy at this late stage.

Bit confused. Was expecting significant deluge. We got, little.

Could AW really be that non-typical? A small bit for sure, but not that much.

Does this mean HV have only read a further 200-300 of the remaining 1800? (projecting our figure onto the overall figures)

Hmmm.

Gonna go with us being special methinks....

Inquiring minds want to know...

Is the AW Cooler different? Are our members a bit more skilled or knowledgeable? I mean we do have SYW and Query Letter Hell to help the members out, but are we a bit more ... dare I say, special snow flakes?

Naaa, we are no more special than any other snow flake...

snow flakes are like, totally, individual man.

I dunno. in truth the math say 100 is the equivalent - i'm saying 2-300 in hope.

This could start moving into silly ville.

Unless they post clarity soon.

What I find odd about this whole process is that only one offer has gone through. Out of 4500 submissions (or 2200, give or take, I guess), only one author has been picked up? I guess it was three books, but still. Not one other submission has impressed them enough to make an immediate offer? Bummer.

That's a very good point, SKDaley. One could speculate all sorts of reasons, though. Perhaps, out of sheer coincidence, Harbour's submission was one of the first that they happened upon in mid to late October, once the vettings began. I have this idea that normally they only check out the pitch and synopsis to begin with. Harbour's pitch caught someone's eye. The readers were new to the process, and despite being instructed not to delve deeper into each submission, somebody did. That person opened each of her files and couldn't put it down, and presently they brought the package to a person of higher authority. Even so, HV spent a good month or more passing it around the office before they were sure that they wanted to select Harbour in advance of their official announcement.

Now, imagine that this deal sidetracked the offices for a couple of weeks, making them shoot past the deadline before they'd vetted even half of the submissions. So now they decide to pull back on their readers. Stick to the rubric, folks! No peeking ahead! And we need to hit the half-way point soon, before 4000 authors come after us with pitchforks!

Having revised their process, they have likely already got 6 or more good prospects among the reserved 500, but they've decided it's better PR to comb through the remaining 1800 before making any further announcements. If it took a month to pass around Harbour's MS, imagine the logjam created by 6 or more additional projects. Plus, at some point they will have to weigh whether to meet, shrink, or expand their original publishing goal. Safer to hold back and examine the reserved subs as a group.

I'm less inclined to think the problem lies with lesser-quality subs remaining and more inclined to think it's because HV changed their tactics.
