well, pretending the president isn't dying apparently has been a major part of this fellow's job in recent years.

So, what's the point of the VP if they don't assume command when the president bites it?

IIRC, it's because after the election, Chavez was "too ill" (or maybe already dead, as far as I know) to actually be sworn in or made offical or whatever, so that means the VP's previous term ended but he hadn't been made the VP again. In effect, no official VP when Chavez died.

What Mara said. Basically, since Maduro had been VP the previous term, they let it like that.

Since new elections have been called, I think to perhaps start a new thread about if everyone's cool about it.

A presidential election to replace late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez will be held on 14 April, the country's electoral commission has said.

The announcement follows the appointment of Mr Chavez's favoured successor, Nicolas Maduro, as acting president.
Hugo Chavez died on 5 March after a long battle with cancer.
Mr Maduro will run as the governing party candidate with Henrique Capriles expected to stand for the opposition.
Mr Chavez - who led Venezuela for 14 years - won last October's election against Mr Capriles, polling 54% of the vote to Mr Capriles's 44%.

As Mr Chavez's health worsened, he announced that his vice-president, Mr Maduro, should succeed him.
Mr Maduro, 50, has pledged to carry on the former president's leftist policies and opinion polls have shown him as the favourite to win the next election.

Capriles just announced three hours ago that he will run. Elections are due on April 12th.

So, did Chavez's condition worsened about the time he would've started his new period? Creepy.

It was quite obvious during the elections that he was ill, he went from an unstoppable one-man show to addressing crowds by phone and barely making acts outside the capital. Also, during his victory speech there was a strange, depressing air among his crowd.

This has led to many to believe that he knew he was pretty ill and yet he clutched to power 'til the end.

Somewhere between here and there

So what is the official cause of death? Have they said yet?

Stay close to your mom and keep away from crowds if you can.

Wow, I'm sorry my earlier post proved so prophetic. Have fun with the somber shuffling. I don't suppose you'll be allowed to bring a book.

Do you suppose he'll be embalmed and you'll be expected to shuffle past his corpse looking somber?

Why was your ma chosen, Max? Does she works for the government, or just has a good poker face*?

*Next to Lenin's embalmed corpse is a "No smiling" sign.

She works in a ministry, nonetheless, since she was middle-management she was usually extempt of assisting political rallies and so on. Apparently they are going to rent a bus so they can present their respects.

Depending on when it's going to be the trip we will be going to Los Próceres parading grounds and Military Academy (where he has been exhibited) or the Museum of the Revolution (where he's going to rest so far).

Either way, it doesn't help to cause for sainthood. Also, during a speech Maduro accidentally mentioned that both Chavez and Bolivar passed away outside Venezuela. He didn't elaborate on.

Kaiser, by the way, a Latin American pope. Another one for the list of unbelievable things this year?

A very interesting year, but I'm actually a bit disappointed they didn't chose the black dude. That would've been interesting.
