The Texas House, in a special session, passed an abortion bill over protests of pro choice citizens who flocked to the chambers.
It bans all abortions after 20 weeks, and also imposes new regulations on abortion clinics that will close down all but five of the forty-two clinics in the state. Texas has a population of some 26 million people.
The Dems tried to put in an amendment exempting victims of rape and incest. GOP sponsor Jodie Laubenberg explained that such an amendment was not necessary because rape victims get "cleaned out" in the emergency room when they report a rape.

In a turnaround, Dems are promising to filibuster the bill in the Senate. Since the special session expires Tuesday night, they may actually be able to prevent it from being voted on and passed.
Of course, this is a real filibuster -- someone standing up on the floor and talking for hours and hours, the way it used to be done.

As reported by Chris Tomlinson at the Associated Press, one such amendment would have called for an exemption to the ban in cases of rape and incest; state Rep. Jodie Laubenberg, R-Parker, felt such an exception was unnecessary because “in the emergency room they have what’s called rape kits where a woman can get cleaned out,” she said, incorrectly comparing the procedure to collect physical evidence after a sexual assault to an abortion
