We have 370,000 house fires a year. Everyone has smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.
But we had over two million break ins.
But there is this hue and cry to prevent defending one's home.
You're four times more likely to be the victim of a break in than a fire, but people prepare more for the fire because that is 'common sense' but protecting yourself is 'paranoia'.
Thing is, how many people have accidentally injured or killed themselves or others, in their home, with a smoke detector? The above puts forth an apples to oranges argument, built on the assumption that (generic) someone with a gun in their home actually could and would defend themselves. That isn't obvious, and isn't a given. No more so than the assumption that "everyone has a smoke detector" or that everyone who has a smoke detector keeps a charged battery in it.
It also implies that those two million break ins happened when someone was home, which is a bit of a stretch.
