Okay, step back in time two years ago ...........

A fire breaks out in a suburban home in Ohio. Mom and Junior run outside and call 911 on a cell phone. Family cat escapes with no harm. Fire department arrives and finds house mostly aflame, but manages to extinguish fire before it completely devours house.

And then the fire marshal shows up to do his inspection.

He walks through the charred house and most of the interior is blackened. But then he spots an open bag of kitty litter in the kitchen, wedged between the blackened wall and the scorched fridge. It's not charred at all. It survived beautifully intact.

He wants to know why.

A lab report indicates that particular formulation of kitty litter is such an ideal flame retardant that even the paper bag holding the litter --saturated with the powdered litter-- would not burn.

The properties of the litter make for a unique combination of portability, long shelf-life, and very low weight. And thus a new tool in the fighting of fires comes to the forefront.

New fangled kitty litter doubles as flame retardant

March 27, 2014

... the manufacturer says it never performed flammability testing on the product since it wasn't required for this category of consumer good. So it's flame resistant properties remained unrealized until Deputy Chief Olsen made his discovery.

"Finding a secondary application for a product you created is always nice. But this revelation really surprised us," says Lewis....

If that's that new lightweight litter, that'd be all it's good for. Don't fall for it, people!

Cat litter is useful for all kinds of things. It's absorbent, for one thing, which makes it good for soaking up oil spills as well as cat pee. Up here in Alaska, it's a common thing for people to carry a bag in the car during the winter, to use in case of getting stuck. It doesn't burn, so, yeah, I'd think it would be a good thing to use to smother a fire.

Do I get a Nobel nomination for recognizing that?
