Watched episode 1 of Sword Art Online.
Hmmmmm, let's see:
An MMO game that had only a thousand beta testers
Technology designed to intercept nerve signals that can emit microwaves powerful to fry the human brain
Apparently no safeguards being implemented in such dangerous technology for something like this
Also, this logic:
"So we just disconnect the NerveGear and we're safe."
"Nope, the Gear has a battery."
Well unless that battery lasts forever . . .

Or, you know, emit EMP at the NerveGear with an EPFCG, or alter the helmets themselves to be non-lethal, like say, take out the battery first and THEN cut the power. A single man developed both the tech for the helmets and the game--ALL BY HIMSELF. No one else has a clue how these things work."
And for buck's sake, it's just a plain old helmet that slips over the head. All you need to do is rip it off quickly and it won't matter that the microwave is emitted, BECAUSE THEIR HEAD WILL NO LONGER BE INSIDE IT!
Yep, it's definitely an anime trying to be technical.
P.S. Finally there's also the fact that since they're trapped in the game, they have no proof that anything Kayaba said is true.
