If my cat were a comic-book villain her name would be Destructo.

And what I want to do is make sort of a wall of plants to enclose my patio area. I'm gonna get an outdoor shelf type thing and set it near the edge of the patio. then fill it with teh greenery. Then when I have my patio furniture out there, I'll have a little privacy.

I'm having trouble finding a hardy plant that doesn't need much sun (I want to put it on a windowless/direct sunless wall) that isn't poisonous :(

Actually, it struck me today that if I wind up getting as far as a PhD in Creative Writing, I could write the first novel I ever conceptualised.

The story goes: I had this visual idea for a story, which made me seriously consider writing. I spent a year making notes on it. I kept putting off writing it, because it seemed so difficult. I wanted it to be this really intense, gothic sort of science fantasy thing. Anyway, I kept putting off writing it, and then my computer died, and I lost the outline (and learned to always back up!).

So eventually I started writing a light-hearted fantasy romp instead, which became the first novel I wrote.

I've never gone back to that original idea, but I keep wondering, "What if?"

So I figure, even though it's totally intimidating, maybe that would make a good PhD novel?

Do they actually do PhDs in creative writing?

I'm not mocking, just curious. 'Cos a PhD is a research degree, so wouldn't you have to do something around how people write or something like that? Gots to have a question to answer, yanno.

You can tell me, I'm not a doctor.

Yeah, I get conflicting information regarding that.

Like, someone told me that you can't do a PhD in creative writing at my Uni. But in one of my tutorials, when I mentioned writing fantasy, the tutor said something like, "Oh, we have some PhD students writing fantasy right now."

Except I'm not sure if he said PhD, or if it was maybe Doctorate or Grad students...

So yeah, I'm not sure.

Oh, just had a thought... This class is for both English and Creative Writing first-year students. So maybe what my tutor meant was that there were English students doing a thesis on fantasy novels, but not writing them themselves?

That probably makes more sense.

Thesis: Unicorns are awesome.

Research: the many ways in which unicorns are, indeed, awesome.

Question answered.

A PhD is a doctorate, but nobody uses the term 'grad students' in englandland, so although I think they're probably research students too, I'm not totally certain.

Anyway, I just checked it out on the internet and it looks like you can do one, but that it has to incorporate some kind of supporting research as well as the actual manuscript itself.

So it sounds like your plan's a goer!

I used to think that too, but numerous unscientific studies have shown unicorns to actually be zebras in disguise.

Silly Muppet. Everyone knows a zebra is a horse that has been put in jail.

But that's why they have those horns! So they can hook the keys off the guard's belt and go back to being a horse.

Common misconception. *adjusts monocle* the horn, or as the experts say, Ze pointer horn (the experts are slightly jarman) is for indicating which fair maidens they intend to rescue.

True fact.

Also true, they sell the maiden's hair on the horn market for double black market value.

Why, those horny rascals!

So all those previous studies were wrong and unicorns are actually a bunch of roguish knaves!?

This is why we do research!

Cliff! I do hope you are taking notes. We've done half the work for you. Because I am nice I will outline it. (No powerpoint)

1. Unicorns are not zebras
2. Zebras are dumb
3. Unicorns are actually jerks
4. Sydney is amazing (not expressly stated, but implied.)
5. I am hungry.
