* Last of the Dragons and Some Others - E. Nesbit
Classic dragon short stories. Each explores a different idea about dragons.

I'd forgotten that! Great stories, hugely underrated storyteller in this day and age.

It IS a great take. Nothing radically new, but very well realized. However, it's important to note that dragons don't play a major role in the books.

(Also, IMO don't read the fourth book.)

ETA: Also also - LeGuin wrote a neat, nasty little story about dragons, set in the same universe, called "The Rule of Names." Another goodie.

absolutely - and the rule of names is very cool

Great thread. I love dragon stories (always looking for new ones) and would love to one day write one. But I have a lot of research to do first. Thanks for all the ideas

Okay...I'm trying to remember the name....

THE HERO AND THE CROWN!

a very awesome, no nonsense approach to dragon slaying in it with some rather fun bits of alchemy in it.

Just remembered another one: The DragonCrown War Cycle by Michael A Stackpole. It is a four book series that IMHO is very well made. The dragons play a greater part in books three and four.

* The Dragon and the George - Gordon R. Dickson
I've never read it, but it's definitely dragony.

I have read it. I think it's a wonderful book. :)

Also, though I noticed the OP mentioned some Tolkien books, there's a Tolkien short story that might be worth looking into, Farmer Giles of Ham. The story talks about a farmer who deals with a dragon named Chrysophylax. It's kind of a humorous story, but I enjoyed it, and maybe you will, too. :)

As for Eragon, which someone mentioned elsewhere in the thread, don't let some people's viewpoint get in the way of making your own darned decisions. I personally like that book, regardless of what others have told me. If you read that book, it doesn't make you less of a person ... or less of a writer. Whether it's good or not depends upon whether you, the individual reader, like it or not.

The hunting of the last Dragon by Shyrrl Jordan had an interesting take on dragon hunting.

Okay, this may seem a little wierd, but go with it.

Tarnsman of Gor. Yes, I know there are no dragons, but substitute a dragon for Ubar of the Skies, it works just as well. Even better is Assassin of Gor, with the tarn races. What is great is the wildness of the beast that Norman captures very well.
