I always thought Bolivar was a Che Guevara type. Now you're making him sound like Benjamin Disraeli.

He was pretty close to Jefferson and the rest, with the exception that he supported the gradual liberation of slaves by making sure the children and granchildren of then current slaves to be educated as any other free person so they would not be unprotected, as it happened in many instances.

Bolivar was a classical liberal influenced by France and the US. He attempted to introduce first a federal system, but felt it failed due to the people's lack of civic customs and self-governance giving as result provinces that easily negotiated with or surrended to the Spanish crown, disorganized militias with little to no training nor organization against a full-on professional armed forces and politicians either attempting to introduce far too abstract and impractical ideas or tried to get as much profit out of it as they could.

Basically this led to Bolivar becoming a bit more conservative in his political outlook considering Federal Liberalism "too perfect for the Spanish America", finding himself forced supporting a strong central parlamentary government and increasing more desperate measures as Gran Colombia fell apart, even having himself forced to be named "President For Life" since politicians were convinced that if he named himself Emperor then there could be a chance.

It's more of a tragic George Washigton, I think. A better Che Guevara analogue would be Francisco de Miranda

The nice thing about dead people is that you can portray them however you want.

Venezuela and Colombia as a strong personality cult about him. The main street and main square of all towns in Venezuela are traditionally named after Bolívar and all governments have used out of context quotes to justify some of their more cintroversial actions.

One week after the Venezuelan currency gets devaluated (from 4,30 to 6,30) and everyone a bit uneasy on the posibility of rising petrol prices (less than 10 cents per gallon) we finally have a proof of life from Hugo Chávez:

Hugo Chávez reading February 14th edition of Granma.

According to the government, the president got a tracheal tube and that's why he can't talk but is always updated of how things are in Venezuela and has allegedly even sent letters and signed laws over there. Meanwhile, the responses of the Venezuelans have been varied, going from compassion to mistrust. Around noon the Twitter tag ChavezLivesAndSmiles top-trended while the suspicion of said pictures to be photoshoped have not only come up but have become become memetic.

Edit: By the way, apparently on the Granma's frontpage there's a mysterious white arrow on the upper right corner. It has been a while since I used Photoshop back when I took Graphic Design as a subject, but some take it as a proof that this is 'shopped. Can't tell since it has been a while, as I said before.

Personally, I consider anything that keeps him from talking an 'improvement.'

I notice he has the same expression in every picture. Maybe he's already been embalmed. That could be anyone's hand.

If they're allowed to use a camera, why not a videocamera to show his movement, however slight? Definetely fishy.

He's back.

Unlike his returns from Cuba on previous trips, the government did not televise his arrival or release video or photographs, nor did he address the country.

And it was informed to the people by Twitter. With no pictures nor videos, just staff accounts. Is it me or there's something weird about it?

We're talking about Chavez, the I-Can't-Spend-Five-Minutes-Without-Spouting-My-Hatred-For-The-Evil-Capitalist-Empire-At-Full-Volume-In-National-Broadcast megalomaniac?

I'm sure he's returned. In a coffin.

If he's alive, then he wanted to die in Venezuela. If he's dead, then Cuba didn't want giving opposition conspiracy theorists multiple orgasms with having El Comandante dying in Havanna.

And seems we're back with chemo...

On Friday Vice President Nicolás Maduro said that Mr. Chávez was undergoing “complementary treatments,” a phrase that officials had used previously without specifying what the treatments were.

But this time Mr. Maduro added, “You know what the complementary treatments are, don’t you? Well, the chemotherapy that they apply to the patient after an operation, as he went through chemotherapy and radiation therapy after the operations in 2011 and 2012.”

Speaking after a mass to inaugurate a small chapel erected near the military hospital where officials say Mr. Chávez is staying, he described the treatments as being hard and said that Mr. Chávez is in a “battle for his life” but in good spirits.

Meanwhile, rumors go ablaze around with everyone looking any rock a bit of information, no matter how insane.

A brief statement read on national television by Communications Minister Ernesto Villegas late Monday carried the sobering news about the charismatic 58-year-old socialist leader's deteriorating health.

Villegas said Chavez is suffering from "a new, severe infection." The state news agency identified it as respiratory.

...

Villegas said Chavez was "standing by Christ and life conscious of the difficulties he faces."

He also took the opportunity to lash out at "the corrupt Venezuelan right" for what he called a psychological war seeking "scenarios of violence as a pretext for foreign intervention."

He called on Chavez's supporters, who include thousands of well-armed militiamen, to be "on a war footing."

I guess I don't have anything else to add.

Maduro just said the US is recruiting active armed forces and is expelling one David Del Monaco, military attaché crew of the US embassy in Caracas.

The Speaker of the House becomes president and then we ha e elections later this year were VP Maduro is the assigned candidate by the Government Party.

To be honest, nobody knows. I'm shocked. Chávez has been president for over half of my life. For me, he's so integral of Venezuela like the flag or the anthem.

Okay, that's the fourth time in four weeks I've seen things I never thought I would on my lifetime.
