*thwaps* Blond. Character Charts, missy! I swear by 'em.

VTW, it's finally a sunny, hot day here. Gorgeous. Guess what I'm doing at 3 pm?

Getting my eyes dilated.

Heh.

So I just got an email from one of the assistant editors at my pub asking for character descriptions for 3:59 to give to design.

They're starting to brainstorm a cover for a book I haven't even finished writing yet.

HAHAHAHAHAHA.

I can't even remember what the characters look like!

OMG, base one on me? Please :D? ...Like, a younger, hot version of me. :D

*snort* My chubby sausage legs? Hardly.

OMG, please! I had to close the thread and fan myself when this pic came up.

*fans self*

*makes out with Blond's leg*

thanks puglets!

well, one particular painting is about
3 years late in payment. almost $400.
i asked 3x. then i left it. because it was
just awkward and not cool. a colleague
(fellow YA author) had bought the painting
and it wasn't worth it for me to pursue if
she wasn't going to pony up.

this week, her PA emailed me. (no,
it was not an issue of lack of cash in
this instance.) we'll see
if payment actually happens!

i definitely don't treat my art as a business.
i don't want to. i've lost the joy of writing
(the full joy of it) to business and art is my
last sanctuary. so if people aren't going to pay
me, so be it.

phoenix, are you volunteering at the school
library? or your local one??

I REFUSE!!!!!!

Honestly, I just can't write with character charts. Doesn't work for me. I keep it all in my head. The problem is I don't know who these characters are until at least the second draft, and the physicality goes along with that.

Flyby, will catch up later!

Blondie, thanks. I'm totally not going to do that. I want to make sure it's right when I send it back, so I want to redo it and have it betaed again. Which will reasonably, I think, take me a few weeks/couple months. I think. Is it ok for it to be 2-3 months later for it to be done right, or is she going to go "Jesus, she's never going to turn stuff in on time!"

That is, if she still wants to read it after my email screwups yesterday. I haven't heard back. Oy. *kicks inbox, then self.*

Yay, Jo! Ok. Back to work. I'll bbl

blondie, i'm with you.
i refuse to do any sort of planning
or such tho i do have a catch all doc
for each novel that i throw things into.

many times, i don't know the characters until
two drafts in.

was just brainstorming in car, must add to
my novel 4 doc. =)

Blonde--Oh, so now WE'RE the crazy ones? :D

I go back and forth whether I need to be an outliner or not.

I sometimes wonder if I would be more productive if I was strict about outlining, but with non-fiction what always gets me un-stuck is really walking around thinking of the first paragraph.

But the non-fiction I write is really so short-- and even for that I sometimes outline. The one novel I finished I did with an outline.

I always like hearing what you guys think about this. One fear of mine is that I'll use outlining and character charts as a procrastination tool.

Another fear of mine is that I'll get sucked into a portal to another universe and someone will find all my papers, drafts and outlines left behind and laugh at them :)

But pants-ing is more fun for me.

I am the total opposite of you two when it comes to characters. Anal-retentiveness, I has it. :D

I'm right there with you Lily. Outlines, character sketches, plot arcs...um, yeah. I may go a wee bit overboard.

I'm just in awe of anyone doing all of that. I don't know enough about anything to make a graph, chart, or outline until I'm done.

lily pie, that's the irony. i'm like that
in the rest of my life. i start thinking about
my ten year anniversary when we hit five years.
haha! i'm a Total Planner.

but with writing, i'm just totally intuitive.
but you do write in a genre that needs more
planning, right?

i was explaining my process like a jigsaw. i can't
tell you what the story will be like until i write
the scenes and lay out the edges of it. so it's
impossible to truly plan ahead.

one of the main characters in my serpent
demon book literally came out of no where. and
so much of the plot hinged on him! but i couldn't
have created him without having written to him.
if that makes sense.

The gaseous pit of stupidity
the rare occasions I create outlines or character charts it's incoherent babbling on scraps of paper that get taped to the wall.

My biggest problem with character charts, outlines, whatever, is that they take so much TIME to put together. I'd rather spend that time writing. Later, when the book is resting, or out with betas, I'll put together a "book bible" that has all the character charts, place and place descriptions, and things I know I'll use for reference while revising, or in the future.

Especially for this current book I'm working on. There's a lot of unique curses, and a whole menagerie of creatures I need to keep track of, and then there's one character that expresses emotions through the color of her eyes, because that's all she has (seriously, she's a puff ball with eyes and a pari of hands). Right now I'm keeping track of all this stuff in the Project Notes, because it's easy to make quick notes there and keep writing.

It's the compiling all the notes that's going to take a while.

Hello to the new thread! I took a fire dancing class last night (for those that didn't see on Twitter and/or Facebook). I'm so stoked about it. It was such a blast, even just going over the basics. I have my own homemade poi, and I keep smacking my BOOKS with them. It's fun anyway. :D

Oh, I should have made that clear. I do NOT write all of that beforehand. I write some of it and flesh out more as the story progresses. Usually I outline six chapters ahead, write the chapters, then outline the next six. As I do that I add in the plot arcs and flush out the character sketches.
