Honestly, I think space just fascinates me. I'm not too fond of Earth-based sci-fi. But oddly I'm very fond of the mundane setting in other genres.
Same here. I think a lot of why is actually that I read so many Earth-set post-apocs back when they were prominent, and just grew bored with it. I'd rather read something set on another planet or better yet in space.
I think it's the same reason I like the old ocean-going novels, too. A ship on the ocean is a lot like a ship in space.
I suppose if you think about it, it's the two sides of the Rapture; those cast out into the heavens and those left behind.
Those who anticipated the Rapture didn't expect spaceships would be the mechanism.
