I had rabbits when I was a kid - nothing fancy, just rabbits. They were tough - lived outdoors in Vermont year round for eight years.

A couple years ago, my son asked for a small pet and gp's it was, or is rather. I don't know how much research you've done - sounds like you've done at least some to know they're temperature sensitive - but check out the guinea pig rescue we went through to get ours - lots of info on their site, from cages (the ones in pet stores are typically way too small - ours is a minimum size and takes up an entire Thomas the Train table - my son had outgrown it and it makes a great base. We keep it in the living room, where most of our hanging out happens), which veggies they can and cannot eat, socialization needs, etc. They also have links to adopt gp's.

I also recommend that if you do decide to get gp's that you get a pair - they're like people in their need to be able to interact with others of their kind - but not for breeding. Not done correctly, you could end up with eyeless pigs, toothless pigs, deaf pigs - some of the liter ours came from were deformed this way. They came from a hoarding situation - 35 gp's in one house - where they were bred indiscriminately.

Ours were very shy when we brought them home over a year and a half ago, but are now friendly little beasts who wheek and purr and make all kinds of noises to get our attention. They interact with our dogs too - verrah cute.

Hope that helps! Good luck!

Any small children in the house?
I've found guinea pigs a little more tolerant of little ones than rabbits are.
It's also kind of rewarding that the guinea pigs can "talk" to them. I love the little noises they make.

Rabbits are far more cold tolerant. They need room and exercise. Bored rabbits will chew the crap out of everything. Ware your electronic cords! They are lots of fun, though.

Chinchillas have them both beat for indoor small fuzzy mammal. They're very cold tolerant, and they don't smell. I had one, and she was the sweetest. Heat is a problem though.

Thanks a bunch! This is all really helpful. :)

And the rest of you needn't worry about the solar flares. It already hit you. :flag:

I'm gone for a few hours and when I come back Rob has turned in to a sparkling kitty.

Must be the solar flares.
