Enjoyment
Maybe this is the difference. I enjoy writing, but I enjoy reading even more. If I had to give up one or the other, I'd give up writing without a bit of regret.
While the pleasure is definitely of a different sort, I do find reading every last bit as pleasurable as almost anything else on earth, including sex (But there's a choice I'd hate to make!), and there's no sheer will about it.
I read because I absolutely love to read. I love the feeling of getting lost in a story, of living the story right along with the protagonist. I love good writing, good characters, good story. I'm never outside the book looking in, I'm inside the story, and the real world has vanished.
I'm driven by sheer will, always have. And it's not like you can derive as much pleasure from reading as you would from, say, sex or sudoku. I get my kick from writing.
