How about five nominations per person? Any group with at least three noms makes it to the poll thread which will follow in a couple of weeks.

I'll toss out a few noms to get things started:

-MUSE (duh)
-Led Zeppelin
-Pink Floyd
-Green Day
-The Beatles

Have at it, folks.

There's only one nomination needed for best rock group EVAH: Credence Clearwater Revival.

I don't listen to much rock... I'm more of a metal listener.

But I may as well throw a nomination out to an Aussie rock band: AC/DC.

I don't think I'll use my other 4 nominations...

How's about you use just one more for MUSE? There's a good pal.

Sorry, but you folks are listening to some ancient rock. Is it even rock anymore when they're playing it on the Muzak system at the grocery store?

In that case: Foo Fighters, Collective Soul, Death Cab for Cutie, Snow Patrol, and (oh hell, since we're in the modern age) Muse.

That's better. Not to criticize anyone's choices, but it's kind of a no brainer to prattle off Floyd, Zep and the Beatles, great as they may have been 30 or more years ago. There should be some limit* - say, if a band hasn't produced an album length work of new material in 2 decades, they should be relegated some historical status in a file called Yeah, Tell Us Something We Don't Know.

Also, I totally forgot to mention Menomena. Such brilliance.

*I'm not attempting to put any limitations on this particular thread. If I was starting one, though, I'd make that distinction.

But look how many flash-in-the-pan artists couldn't stand the test of time: Rick Derringer, Billy Squier, even Joan Jett. Technically perfect, but lost in the sands of time. There are some GREAT bands out now (I'm the most excited about music I've been since the early 90s) but who're we still going to be talking about in 30 years? It takes the test of time to determine the true "best evahs"

But what's left to say about them by the time enough decades have passed to prove out their everlasting popularity? Is there anything left to say about The Beatles, The Stones, et al that hasn't been blathered about a zillion times already?

Sorry, I'm a middle ager bored to tears with classic rock.

How about that they're still outselling the current flavors of the week?

Sorry, I'm a middle ager bored to tears with classic rock.

As am I. My current tastes run to alternative, Americana, and alternative country, and there is some great rock music coming out right now. But when asked who were the greatest in rock from 1955 or whenever until now, I'm going to pick my faves, the best sellers, and those who've had the most influence. My point is that as good as many of the current artists are it's too soon to see what effect they will have. Had she asked for my favorites I might have answered slightly differently.
