This is a great contest! It's been a while since I've written something in iambic pentameter. Hopefully, it won't be too archaic-feeling (I have difficulty with modern poetry, but thankfully I don't use alas or thy. I do want people here to be able to stand me, after all.).

Write it and let the voters decide if it's too much. Jan 31st at midnight is the deadline.

26 so far. The deadline is looming, so those of you on the fence will have to hop to it. No entries after January 31st allowed.

Where do I find a definition of a sonnet? I've never tried one...

okay. okay. Thank you. That's pretty obvious. Remember, I'm the one who started the lazy thread. I will google them. You may see an entry, if I can figure it out. Thanks.

I sent mine! Now I get to wait.

Oh, and thank you for offering such nice prizes, including (or perhaps especially?) the promised critiques.

And I'm done. I was right, it was fun. It's in your paw now, Dawg. Can't wait to see the others and vote.

Kevin, if you can fit your facility with beautiful images into a sonnet form, I may have to kill myself, but it will be a happy death.

Shakespeare did a good few -- for some reason I seem to remember #41 as a favorite. Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote a bunch too -- see Sonnets from the Portuguese.

Also, Shelley's Ozymandias is a fine work, one that is familiar to many.

There's an e.e. cummings sonnet laying around the boards in one of the rate-a-poem threads; I'll come back with the link. Sorry - couldn't find it.

Note, also, that Limey's loosened the rules around form for this comp.

Well, only to the point that I didn't want only Shakespearean sonnets. We're nothing if not variants here at AW, so I didn't want the constriction of rules to choke the life out of the contest. See my next post, btw.

somewhere, out there
can't think of a title

I'm a newbie, and the first thing I did was enter this contest - after I googled sonnet to find out what it is! I hope that just because it's about love doesn't mean it has to be serious. I don't do serious. Can't. So thanks for teaching me something new right away.

Mine's also done and I had fun and then I had to name it,
Considered a number and then I decided to claim it
(after several different revisions,
thanks for your patience dawg
on my re-re-resubmissions!)
